I am pleased with my work and happy I did the course at Stockport College. It has been a journey and there have been ups and downs with developing my style over the three years. I think I have found my style, which is making things out of materials and photographing it and working to a large scale. However, I do like trying out different methods and I do need to make more progress on my work and after university I don’t want to stop or take a break, I will try and stay motivated as like Mr Motivator.

My next aim after university is to do masses of work experience, with companies who create music videos, set design, prop making, window displays, creating festivals and have fun and enjoy what I do.

I also have fears about what to do after university; having no tutor to look at my work and give me guidance, I will find it hard at first but through my Personal Development Programme I have realised that this will be my guidance with contacts and artists in the industry, to help with my work and vice versa.

London was a confidence booster, on our first portfolio visit I was nervous but, after a few visits I got a bit more confident with displaying my work. When at university you are in a bubble and it is great to hear comments on your work from other people in the industry looking at your work and giving you advice.

The opportunities so far are, I have been offered a few work experiences in London and, to keep up with my work/portfolio, I will try and get a job in a creative environment to have the money coming in, such as a visual merchandiser or a creative assistant in retail head office, to further my career and to keep my motivation going.

My three major projects which I have done this year are Touring Cubes proposal for D&AD Awards, Book Illustration and Fish Tank proposal for Music. The Touring Cubes and Fish Tank proposals were a different way of working, more on architecture and locations and also were song based. I really enjoyed working on these projects; I worked in my style by creating the handmade props and tweaking them in Photoshop. I understand Photoshop now but I still need to discover how to use more of its tools. I know when the image looks right, because of what I am trying to communicate and then I take a photograph of it.

With the Touring Cubes, they were based on two tracks from an artist. I based it on the images of the meaning of two songs and was influenced by a science artist called Will Burtin His work are scientific models, some contain in glass boxes, with flashing interactive installations. A visual artist, Annette Messanger, with an installation of an inflate/deflate human body, also influenced me. This project was scientific; I would like to work like this again.

The Fish Tank I art directed the same way as with the Touring Cubes. The image was photographed and I created the pieces myself. In the future I would like to be an art director. I had to work on the designed to be displayed on three panels for a meeting room. I based the imagery on a track called ‘fish’ by Mr Scruff, an artist, and, because the song is quirky and humorous, it fits my style of working. I interpreted the song and focused on the two vocal samples. I did find it hard at first to communicate the mock up. I thought of sticking the element to the glass but that was a bad idea and also I thought of fishing wire. I got this idea when I went to Common, a bar in the Northern Quarter of Manchester to see window installations by two artists, called Lord Whitney Installation.

I am pleased with the outcome and, as this is for a live proposal, hopefully the agency will say yes, so I can install it. If I did it again I would change my time keeping; we had a two week break and I should have had the confidence to make my own decisions; however, I waited to speak to my tutor and he had the idea of actually making the elements and taking a photograph and I already had that in mind over the Easter holidays, therefore could have worked on the project sooner.

I based the book illustration on “Soulmates” by Marian Keyes. I used a different working style with this book illustration. I enjoyed printing the colours and will use this technique in the future but I am not a standard illustrator, thinking within four lines and I don’t think this image complements my other images. I tried to think of the word ‘Soulmates’ and I did lots of research and I came up with the science behind it, as a chemical reaction.

I’m looking forward to my experiences and personal development next year; this is a new beginning to further develop myself as an artist.

I am going to fab lab tomorrow to laser cut out a mustache ring, out of black perspex and the type will be etched on. This is the second time I've used Abode Illustrator, I will bring everything on my hard drive, just in case.

Recent Visit to London & Leeds

When we went to London for portfolio visit, I was happy that I went, I made one appointment for myself called Fred & Eric.

Fred & Eric are multidisciplinary creative agency, they combine illustration & animation. They were lovely ladies, give me advise about my work, they said to keep them up dated with how my work is going & this summer I might be helping out with a music video with them.

Second portfolio visit was with Faber & Faber, this book agency was not what I want to get into for my career but it was very helpful. It was interesting of how a front book cover is created.

Third portfolio visit was Big Orange, it is a studio shared with AOI. They went through our portfolio & one of the illustrators said about my work (which made me think) on the ‘A Night in The Woods image’ “is this the finished image, or is this a record of what your night would be & is the photograph the final image?” for my portfolio I will change the title to a record of of the night. We met an artist called Paul Davis, he was a humorous, quirky character & made us laugh. he showed some of his work & told us to enter magazines.

That evening we went to a pub in Kingways for an event with Shell Suit Zombie, they are a project run by graduate, that encourage students & the creative industry.

The next day we met up with Gillian Blease, she was very helpful; she said while looking through my work I should get into art direction, installations, and festival based/live events.

On the Thursday in the morning I want to Leeds to see Lord Whitney they are a collaboration between Amy Lord and Rebekah Whitney. They combine photography, prop making, set design with creating life size illustration & installation. They produce window display, festival tents & interiors. Their studio was amazing, they were both helpful & what else I should have my portfolio. They are art directing Just So Festival in the summer in Leek & they want 3 interns to help out with the festival, they want a summery of what I hope to gain from this experience for the 20th May, I am going to enter it.

Science Connections.
I am going to create two illustrations for a short comedy story called 'Soulmates' from one of my favorite author Marian Keys. The story is about couple who were born the same day, same year, the same hair and they were in love. They had a baby called Quenni, split up and became friends but they are still soulmate and going on holiday with their partners. Image shown above has given me ideas for that invisible connections that soulmates have and no ones see.

Jigsaw.
Another idea is about connection of two jigsaws but not making it love, making it as friends who have a spirit connections. I have vision of a life size jigsaw's and people wearing them connect together.

Sorry I have taken an incredibly long time to get back to you; I've had a very busy couple of months!

I've tried to answer your questions...

What materials I use and how I approach my work depends - sometimes there might be particular materials or a method that lends itself well to communicating my idea, sometimes it might be because I want to try out something new and learn new skills. Time and money are often constraints that rule out certain materials...

When I was at college and had projects that I felt were getting too big for me I roped in help - either from friends in my year or from first or second year students. It's cool to work with someone else too - if you have someone like-minded you can team up with it really helps when you want to realize ambitious projects. I think it's really important to get a good set of friends at college so you can support each other on projects when you leave.

Don't feel worried about when you leave - my advise would be just to launch into as much work experience as possible in the areas that you're interested in. Gradually you'll work out what you enjoy, what you don't, what you're best at and make contacts... it doesn't matter that you don't know exactly what you want to do - I'm working in advertising at the moment, but I'm not sure I want to do this forever - who knows what I'll do next! I say do something until you don't enjoy it anymore, or until you've learnt all you think you can from it.

With your portfolio I'd say it might be work including a small description of the project with your images so that they have more context.

Anyway, I hope this is of some use and isn't too late to help you with your PDP!

Thank you for your email, i'm glad you like my work. I haven't really been doing much prop based, costume or photography work for the past few years, but i'll try and answer your questions as best I can.

Which artists do you admire?
Andy Warhol, John Waters, Vincent Gallo, Larry Clark,

What materials do you use?
For my illustration I just use pens and paper! For other work I have often used a variety of textiles from a supply I have been building up over many years or vintage fabric, remnants and trimmings.

Who influences you?
Its not just people who influence me, I am influenced and inspired by all different kind of things. I don't really look at the work of my peers or follow much contemporary art or illustration so I am influenced by my own inspirations. (theres a list at the about me section of my website)

How long does it take to do your work/shoot?
It completely depends on the project. Some work can be done in a few hours, others take months of planning and weeks to complete.

If you get an artist block on your work, how do you overcome that?
I stop trying to do whatever it is i'm trying to do, do something completely different. Go for a long walk at nighttime. do something else and come back to it.

What would you advice someone who trying to get into the industry?
I'm not sure I really consider myself part of an industry but my advise to any creative people is to try and never compare yourself to anybody else and create for your own sake.

I took a look at the files you attached, I think you are creating some really interesting images and the figures and subject matter seem really considered, I think it might to be good to try and work on the backgrounds of the images and experimenting with propmaking for the backgrounds and sets, perhaps also even 3 dimensional text (it could be any kind of materials or techniques) would be interesting to try too.

This artist from Finland also works with half human / half animal figures (Do you remember Year 1 hybrids?). She explains: "The characters in my most recent paintings are often hybrids between humans and animals. The animal heads work as masks when placed on a human body. Throughout history, everyday life has been linked to the spirit-world with the help of masks. I place masks, typical for contemporary popular culture as seen in the worlds of metal and goth, in the framework of today’s social rituals and role-playing."(source)

The wearer becomes a something new and the viewer wonders what they are looking at? Animal masks have been used in the theatre in plays such Equus by Peter Shaffer and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Ask what is the significance of these masks being used?
Animal masks are also used in other cultures for ceremonial or ritual purposes, such as these Inuit animal masks, the people believe that the spirit of the animals would be presented to them so they wear these masks and have a dance or a festival for the spirits. A wolf, owl or polarbear masks would signify these animals qualities such as feirocity, wisdom, strength, cunningness, and speed. As well as looking at how mask are made and what they look like, really think about what they mean for your Journal.

I am looking at public art and came across Bob and Roberta Smith- he created a diary for a book called 'Art U Need: My part in the Public Art Revolution'.
He commissions five artists to create site-specific projects to transform open spaces in South Essex.

These guys will be wearing masks in the actual shoot and it will be dark with colours shining off them. The 3 in front are the dancers and 3 at the back are the band.

Personal Project: Music Event 'A night in the Woods'

My Theme is Night in the Woods,'If you go down to the woods today, your sure of a big surprise' when you go down to the woods you feel scared and your imagination goes wild and start seeing things. I want my night to be like. I am taking the woods somewhere that I have in mind, going to make the props for the woods and have fun. The song 'if you go down to the woods today' really freaks me out, bit creepy, so I put it on.
I am inspire by Beatrix Potter with her beautiful little drawing, painting of landscape and woods and her stories. With the event I am working in that style with woodland animals and make the event eerie with a dark twist.
I am going to have entertainment, a live band- Unshaggables, a DJ- Oldest Toddler, maybe a dance group and a back drop with animation playing at the back of them.

I am going to make masks for them made out of latex, easy to breath and not to heavy on the face, then add materials on the latex- would like my mask to be unusual wood land animals (Beatrix Potter, good example)
The film Fantastic Mr.Fox is such a delightful film to watch. I am fond of the animation and how they move. Also their faces, would be keen to work in that way with the furry faces and would like to create that on my masks. I find this artist eerie and wonderful Dennis Mc'Nett, he creative a window display called the Barney Display with enormous animal heads on the manneguins shaped out of wood.

Research: I looked at Jiggery Pokery, they organize events and it looks fun. The Smirnoff advert Summer Night Dream and Mighty Boosth The Mod Wolf. I'm inspired by Beatrix Potter and would like my night to be unusual with the research that I am looking at. Also going to read the Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter, some notes and more ideas.
I am also going to go to the Manchester National History Museum to draw the stuffed animals for the mask making.

I have decided to change my personal project a little: instead organizing a Music Event Night I have decided to create a Virtual Music Event.
The reason why I changed my ideas slightly because I had spoken to my Dad and asked him to play at the Event and he said "it will be freezing outside, have it inside the pub but it is small and there be no space for a dance group and also I don't think the owner will let you change the layout inside and their local to consider."
I thought of hiring somewhere upstairs in a bar in Manchester but it is going to cost me a lot of money.

A good friend of mine came up with the solution/idea to have a Virtual Event Night and pretend the Event happened.
I am going to create a set and actually have the live band, DJ and a dance group in the woods, with the masks on and people dancing and have the set photographed by a student photographer.
I will also pretend to promote the night and look how to do that with emails, posters/flyer etc.

The outcome of the personal project is having a documentary of my process from A to B, have a few photographs of the set and a finished poster/flyer for the promotion.

Work Experience

From this June, I have been doing some work experience with an up and coming Artist Noemie Goudal. I was the Production Assistant Manager and travelled to London. I was dealing with her frames to her client and deliveries with good commutation with the framer, printers and the processor. I helped out on her new shoot and became a PA, with picking up equipment for the shoot and process. It was a interesting experience and know how to go round London too. I have finished the work experience but in September I am going down to London to help install 5 of her shows. What I have learnt from this experience is an idea of what it will be like after Uni, How to deal with clients, framer etc and to have really good commutation. I also have bit of knowledge on how to use a camera and a old one too from 50 years ago. Also to get your work out there by Competitions, sending to Company's/Magazines/Newspaper's and asking Galleries to put your work up for exhibition's.

From working with the Rolling Stones Magazine she went on the 1975 world tour, also photographed some famous photos with John Lennon and Yoko Ono. I went to the Lecture at the Print Works to see Adrian Shaughnessy and Tony Brook. I was interested with the music side to them and creating music albums for the band Primal Scream and creating the designs for Fabric-London nightclub. They both get inspired by a lot of books, one of them said "when you find something good on the internet, you can't find it again but with a book , you can always find it."

For Practitioners this year, I really enjoyed ContainerPLUS when Nicola Carter came to Stockport College for a talk. They combine and collaborated with illustration, photography, set design, performance, and 3D elements. They have a few well-known clients, Topshop, Selfridges, Sony, MTV and Q Magazine. I found the talk interesting and fun and inspiring.

Nicola set up ContainerPLUS with Luise Vormitty in 2002/2003, they met studying at Camberwell University. They both finished Uni in 2002, their work was very different but both shared a good sense of humor. They had a joint project and had the exhibition at the Notting Hill Arts Club and they got nominated at Creative Review’s “Creative Futures 2003” from that they got commissions, editorials, book covers, and interior design. From that countainerPLUS grow and another lady jointed.

Their style of work is elegant, simple, soft and very thought through. I looked at ContainerPlus last summer and ardor their work and I would to work in a company like them, they seem to reinvent themselves and explore techniques and develop new ideas and I do with the work I create. They seem to have a lot of compassion and care towards their work and looks like they all have fun working too. When I am working I have got to have fun, when I am not having fun, you can see that through your work.

I am working with Jane and we have been team up by a creative writer from MMU Crew for the Manchester Literature festival at the Corner house in October. Our story is about and called 'A Conversation With Quetzalcoatl (The god Quetzalcoatl, is the Feathered Serpent or Precious Twin). We are going to research and go deeper into looking at Mexican Culture and Aztec Gods. Quetzalcoatl is the god intelligence and self-reflection, a patron of priests. Quetzalcoatl is a primordial god of creation- He is a good God and and he created the current world and the fifth sun, by using his own blood to give new life to bones. He is the giver of breath and the god of winds.

Quetzalcoatl symbols - Quetzal feathers and light shines off him. A Quetzal is a fruit eating bird, sacred bird of the ancient Mayas and Aztecs . Today the bird is found in part of the cloud forest from southern Mexico.

This is an idea for one of the finished images. It's all been hand made and photographed. Me and Jane are happy with the outcome. All our props have been photographed and now we are playing around with the images.

We're interested at Pierre et Gilles Using photographs and adding other elements onto the image.

We are happy with the end result, we are gointo to refine the two images more over the summer. Changing the background- maybe paint it or make the background 3D to make the image join together and photograph it again, I had so much fun working with Jane and would like to work with Jane in 3rd year on a project or something.

We're not finished yet, end result will be in September with an animation too

First of all, what a great name. Look at this work, which is full of wit, humour and play on words. It us interesting to see what applications it is used for. You can see from her portfolio that she has worked in contexts as varied as fashion, art installations, window displays, props and dance performance. She also works in a collective.

The brief is to be inspiration from the many and varied examples.
First week we have to use an existing photograph, found photographs and change them. With this image- I cut into it and layered and the lines are from sewing into paper, used the photocopy and blew the the sew up.

For the second part of the brief, we have to produce two images and have a theme or subject matter image is totally open. With this image I have blown up bubbles and scan them into Photoshop using my own photograph. My next step is to screenprint onto photo's that I have used with a throw away camera.

This is what I am heading for, image below. The theme is '4 Precious Pictures.' The same method from above but made into a family album.

The method I used above: I screen printed the bubbles and shapes and scanned them into Photoshop.

I paper mashic the monkey head and took a photo, then Photoshop a man suit to the Monkey. Are breif was to make three Illustration , taking from little stories of panic and what it would feel like.

Swear words and replaced them with swords flying out.

I got two blocks of wood shaped into an elephant and a monster, then got them vacuum shaped into plastic and pop them into the freezer. I took a photo- very quickly of with the ice blocks on a light box.

This is the finished image but with bad time management I quickly took a photograph an hour before handing it in. I didn't sent it off to the to Ted Baker competition, I really regret not sending it and finishing it off. The circles would be turning the patterns behind the boards that the models are holding. I had fun creating this image- it is a little set that I made. I would work in this way again- I will have good organize skills with better time management.
I've nearly finished the brief, next week I got to make three '60s pattern wheels, cut out clothes on the white board and two more models like this. This image is half way through and it be finished very soon. O and the layout of how it is going to be in the front window and that's it.

I am looking at deers specially the antlers to get an idea to make a mask and looking at Antoinette Messenger masks, of teddy heads on dead animals.

Our new brief from YCN Student Awards is to devise a campaign for the launch of the Ted Baker Autumn/Winter collections, that makes use of their store window as its primary vehicle. Finished piece. It is about how women and children walk for miles, I plaster cast my feet, so that they look tired. The pan of water is for you to get the feel of what it is like carrying water for miles.

For our new project we are to research on people (individual behaviour) develop and refine a body of work of body knowledge, that deals with various spheres such as the globe representing the earth, the set of points which are fixed distance from a central point of space. Look at human activity and the role of mental functions within a individual social behaviour upon the given theme- Water. The map of the world of future water stress, on how water availability may change, Temperatures, Population and Industrialisation increases. I've found a website on world water council the website shows how there is a lack of drinking water . There is more water wasted today, more then 1 out of six people lack access to safe drinking water and childern die of borne diseases . I heard about that clouds are being injected to make it rain but it caused a storm, there are things that we don't know whats going on in the world. In this project we are to show more aware on things and inform the public more information on water of how we feel as individual if that happened to us and give an insight on are finished design.

I am researching more on Women and Children in the developing world and how they walk for miles to get water for there family. They walk over 4000 steps a day and the weight of water carried can be over 25 kilograms. Child care suffers, as does education from children collecting water.

I have been looking at Artist landscapes Richard Long and got on the idea of walking and thinking of creating a plaster cast of feet. I been looking at Antony Gormley for research, he uses his own body for sculptures.

I am looking at different of types of buckets that Women and Children use to get water, to help me install the exhibition.

I am looking at children animations/films that are going through doorways Alice in Wonderland, Mr Benn and Willy Wonker. With all the bizarre goings on while going through the door and seeing what on the other side, in the weird and wonderful imaginative world, and time traveling through a door. Also the dream world, where dreams are are happy then turn into a nightmare while looking through a key hole you can see whats happening and how it make you feel (emotions) Also looking through someone mind and their eyes on there thoughts and sences. I have been getting some ideas from Container Plus with the dark rooms with no windows, making you feel intense and scared. Also looking at Daft Punk vidoes- Da Funk for the edviroment. I found this mask on the internet and its so weired, I think they have taken a picture of there own head, used heated paper on fabric and stiched it together and looking making panda heads and cardboard wolf masks. Our theme is on Urban citys, looking through someones eyes in the edviroment we live in through a door. Graffiti is about everywhere, tagging, posters and stickers. From our group, two of them are going to New York and going to research on the edviroment, while two of us are going to research in Manchester/Stockport.

We have all enjoyed working in a group. It gives us an idea what it’s like in the real world, for working at a company or freelance and working together. We all have commutated well together, through emails and blogs. When the boys were in New York or if one of us was off, we keep us all updated. As are roles we have all got different design skills, they have worked out really well in the last two weeks with putting the exhibition together and have been surprising each other with are skills (in a good way).

We are all happy with the outcome with are Exhibition. Our instillation is titled “There’s Two Sides”. This came from the idea that there is 2 sides to every story and 2 sides to every door / doorway. We wanted you to experience this to engage with the piece and watching the second part of our instillation, which is in the box.

The mask is the main piece, it's shown more in the video.

Stages of our door: I have been layering the door with paint, graffiti, sandpaper, then glued posters and flyers on. A memeber of my group friend is going to tag the door and do more graffiti.

I am to produce a pattern/design for Mulberrys flagship London store in Illustrator, it will be applied to the store walls, vinyl cut as a window display (4h x 12w) and to be made into a huge carpet for the store. The design for each should feature the same elements and colour way. I am to not to use texture and look more on line, shape and partterns. Mulberry is a luxuery brand in the uk, they range from bags, wallets, womens and mens clothing, travel accessories and home furnishing. There desgins have featured in Vogue and Talter Mulberry combine cool of the city and the countryside and upto date. The colours I am thinking of working with are mouse grey, burnt orange, dark rouge noir. Also I seen the 2010 collection for Mulberrys and the theme is fairgrounds.

This my pattern I produced it first in photoshop, I draw it and scaned it in and repeated the pattern, then produce it use it Illustrator - eek.

Toffee apples are a right treat at fairgrounds and I like the pattern of these apples and found little patterns of little carousel horses.

Erica Wakerly is a contemporary interior designer, I really love her work.

Post-modernism means post war after war & cerebration of difference & human identity. Postmodern artist sometimes use early modernist, like classical work & combine them to create something new.
Post-modernism started in the 1960s when new forms happened, new art such as pop art, bright colours, mixed photography, paints & drawing. Global started with cultural identity race artistic techniques, mixed media & new commutation technology, such as mobile phones, satellite TV & internet.
‘Like other postmodern works, requires that viewers add their own interpretations for the work to be meaningful. Rather than assert absolutes’(post-modern).
Post-modern art obtains individual meaning of personal stories that responds with awareness.

This my animation called 'the magic carrot' from I stop motion.

Love this video from the band Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the way she dancing and the glitter at the end of the video, it's not an animations but I think it will help me when I'am creating my animation for my dancing horse.

The ABCD pop up book, my maths tutor showed my this, I like the movement and each letter has a different pattern and texture and each letter pops out.

I am loving the animation on this music video Ladyhawke, Illustrations by Sarah Larnach and also check out this blog http://wefindwildness.blogspot.com/ its pretty good blog, its got loads of mixed media from Illustration to music.

I love the movement in the opening sence to Juno, loose animation in this and the music goes so well, so cute.

For my I stop animation my plan is going to based on a theme of a horse, for the background I am going to link it within the figure of my Horse with sound effects or music, my animation is to responds to words that I got given- I am going to produce a 'dancing' horse moving with disco beats.. I have made the Horses head out of paper mashe as I did with my last brief on Little Red Riding Hood, I have found a really good book called Tangible, some amazing funny images that going to help me loads & found some good animation that I put on my blog.

We had a colour day and got into groups of colour decades and research on what colours were used and define four swatches, we research 60s colours and look at a lot of 60s colour books from the library and internet. In the 60s there were underground magazine, which sprang up in America and Europe the best magazine was Oz. (Ilex: publisher: Alastair Campbell, page 1938, 2007)
I found an Interesting page from the Retro graphics cookbook about the colours elements and the colour libraries numbers.

An interview with Sara Fanelli: (Varoom03/ march 07/ interview by Steven Heller)

Sara Fanelli explains how her dream-like images are drawn from a rice gene of pool of mythology, literature, art and playfulness and how her philosophically inclined imagination has created a body of work that challenges and delights in equal measures, also she gives personal interpretation and visual comments to texts rather then merely literal description.

When you sit down to make art, what do you want to come out of it, and are you sure at the outset, what it is that will come out?

I definitely love the element of accident and surprise which is a gift of the process of making images, especially in a relatively old fashioned technique like collage. Cutting the wrong shape; spilling ink; covering mistakes. How I do plan a general composition, so that I have a guide for the happy mistakes. In fact, playfulness in the work (as in life) is so important that if there wasn't an element of it with its surprises, I wouldn't enjoy making pictures as much as I do.

Sorry it’s taken a while to reply, but I've been v busy with one thing and another. Below are some answers to your questions:

What method to use on your images?
I use a combination of drawing and collage

How your images made?
I start the images by accumulating appropriate materials - found photos, textures etc and also by drawing the idea. I then scan the drawings and the bits and pieces and assemble and finish the illustration in photoshop.

They hand made or digital?
A bit of both! (See above)

How big are your images?
I usually work at scale - so about A4 - A3

Who influences you?
Things influence me as much as artists. I collect lots of bits and pieces from charity shops. I like old objects and cultural artefacts - game boards, books, figurines, commemorative plates, etc. If I had to name a couple of artists that I'm interested in at the moment, I might say Hannah Hoch, Cranach, Franz West, and Simon Starling
